9/23/2014The GothamistDigitalWriting$175 flatAround 1,100 words with three sources quoted in piece. There was two revisions. 3/1/2017The Film Colossus QuarterlyDigitalWriting100 We want pieces that explore a movie, that are dynamic and illuminate specific components, taking an insular approach or an externalizing one.

Insular as in when the discussion resides in the world of the film and the internal machinations thereof. For example, how satire works in Spring Breakers; or the apolitical filmmaking in American Sniper; or why the plot holes in It Follows are ridiculous.

And externalizing as in discussing a film in relation to a context with another film or outside of cinema altogether. Like how The Wolf of Wall Street reminds you of Kanye West; why The Night Before is the ultimate argument for legalizing marijuana; Shin Godzilla vs Godzilla (2014), different approaches to the same monster.

As long as it’s focused (and interesting), we’ll consider it. A conversational voice is encouraged as we don’t want pieces to read like a scholarly essay (even though it has that kind of depth). Check out our website for examples of how we approach these analyses. There's no minimum or maximum word count, but we prefer somewhere in the range of 2,000-3,000 words. If you can wow us with 500, do it. With 10,000? Do it!

Bounties will sometimes have notes on topics we're interested in, called "bonus points". These bonus points are not edicts declaring what you should write about—they're merely talking points that have our curiosity. Write whatever fascinates you the most. We'll select whatever we think is the best article.
